Downtown Disney West Side and Pleasure Island

I’m sure no-one visits Disneyworld without paying a visit to Downtown Disney’s -a plethora of shops, entertainment and dining all situated around the prettily named Lake Buena Vista.

The problem when you get there is where to go first-there is just so much to see and do and explore and it’s quite possible to spend all day down here finishing up at Pleasure Island Disney’s clubland dancing way into the night.

At the outer edges is the Cirque du Soleil where La Nouba is performed twice a day to packed theatres. La Nouba means ‘to live it up’ and starting with this wonderful show of art, theatre and acrobatic delights thisis an excellent place to start.

Close by there is the House of Blues where you can simply dine, or book for a concert or come along to the famous Sunday Gospel Brunch which is featured twice a day at 10-30am and 1pm with delicious Cajun-creole cuisine.

Opposite is Disneyquest-Disney’s interactive indoor Theme Park -5 floors of cutting edge technology. I have never been inside it myself but on cooler, showery days it proves to be very popular.

Nearby are the famous Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant and Bongo’s Cuban café. I have tried both several times . They serve delicious food. My favourite dessert at Puck’s was the 4 mini crème brulees-all different flavours. They have taken it off the menu-so I am hoping they will restore it soon.

My other big favourite down here is the mega huge Virgin Megastore you can easily spend all day here listening to music, browsing the goodies on display, the kids watching videos and just browsing the books and magazines. There’s even a small café upstairs –so no need to go outside really. There’s a lift and a disabled toilet in the building so wheelchair users are well catered for.

From there there is a selection of shops which I will leave you to discover yourself until you come to the 24 screen AMC theatre. This is our local cinema-only 20 minutes away and plenty of choice. It has up to the minute technology with THX surround sound and Sony Dynamic Digital Surround Sound. All very wheelchair accessible.

In the middle you have Pleasure Island –as well as dancing till dawn in the many clubs, Harlequins, 8Trax, , Motion you can also laugh your socks off at the Comedy Warehouse. They have lots of special events, Valentine’s Day, Cinco de Maio etc-so just check what is on when you know you are going to be over there. Just remember you need to be 21 to enter the clubs or purchase or consume alcohol.

Finally I just would like to mention Fulton’s Crab House based on a replica of a turn of the century riverboat. Again it is not a place I have visited as we are not overly keen on shellfish and seafood (my daughter is one of those people who doesn’t like fish! ) but it looks magnificent. Raglan Road Irish pub and restaurant is more our scene and you can sit outside under a sun umbrella if you like to eat al fresco. I quite like fish and my daughter can have something else of the extensive menu.
