Downtown Disney - Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil’s permanent show, La Nouba, at Downtown Disney is wonderful – in fact it is better than wonderful, it is fantastic! I have seen them before, doing other shows in other venues, but this one totally surpasses all the ones I have already seen.
La Nouba, in Downtown Disney, is held in a theatre built specially for this show which, from the outside, looks a bit like a futuristic circus tent made from white canvas with soaring peaks. Inside the auditorium the plush red velvet seats are very roomy and comfortable, and tall people will have plenty of legroom. The seats are placed in a banked semi-circle round the stage, so that no matter where you sit you will get an excellent view.
The show begins with a parade, grabbing the audience’s attention and setting the scene, while a cleaner brushes the stage. There are other pre-show activities, but to mention them here would spoil the surprise. When the main performance begins it is absolutely fantastic and quite breathtaking in some places. No one speaks during the show and there is plenty of miming to help us understand what is going on. There are acrobats, trick cyclists, trapeze artists, dancers, gymnasts, clowns, musicians and diabolo artists. The accompanying music is very atmospheric and haunting.
There is something happening on the stage all the time and it can be easy to miss some bits of the action. If you look around the sides of the stage, and to the back, and you will always see something going on. Sometimes there are several little scenes being played out at the same time, so you have to be alert all the time. It is certainly worth a repeat visit to see the things you missed the first time!
All the acts are wonderful – there is Aerial Ballet in Silk, where the artist entwines himself in long, wide, red silk ribbons which descend from above, flowing with gentle grace and ease, and uses them to glide around the stage and fly out over the audience – fantastic! The little girls who do the Diabalo act are amazing, and The Power Track/Trampolines act is an astonishing display of strength and brilliant timing. The performers on the trampolines tumble and bounce their way backwards and forwards across the stage and in and out of the open windows of a ‘building’ – astonishing!
Every aspect of the show is designed to flow and be magical. The costumes are great - some of them are fantastically weird and some are quite plain and simple. The make up, everyone’s facial expression and every single movement on the stage is beautifully choreographed. The music is slightly surreal and adds enormously to the whole experience.
It is the most wonderful show, and I highly recommend that you go and see it.
