Disney’s Wilderness Lodge -- part 4
The final part of this article will deal with the grounds and accommodation options at the Wilderness Lodge resort. As you may have gathered by now if you have read the previous three articles this is one of my favourite hotels.
It is very hard to describe what exactly it is that makes this one so special. It does not have the best or biggest rooms, best choice of places to eat or multiple pool areas. The whole place just feels right and here location is the thing which brings it all together. Most of the other resort hotels are good but they are just placed on the Disney property, apart from the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Before you arrive at Wilderness Lodge you have already moved out of sight of everything else on the property. As you travel down a tree lined road you are met by a huge stone and wood arch which leads you to the parking area in front of the hotel. The hotel has been built on a raised area so that you approach it by climbing up a series of steps through great boulders. This approach makes the hotel more impressive and the height then allows for the hotels spring and river to run naturally through the grounds.
The pool is reasonable but it’s the river trails and overlooks that lead down to it that make the resort special. Wilderness Lodge also has its own man made geyser. This placed after the pool area near the lake and is meant to be like Old Faithful at Yellowstone National Park. They have done a very good job of recreating the landscape around the geyser as it does look very like the original. You can watch the geyser from a raised wooden walkway that meanders through this part of the grounds. It erupts every 20 minutes starting on the hour and lasts about a minute when it does.
The rooms at the Wilderness Lodge are smallest for this class of hotel and follow on with the rustic theme. They have all of the standard things you would expect of this type of Disney hotel just not a lot of space. Disney are doing some upgrades for this resort but it will not alter the room size. The rooms in the two wings have a pool / river view or a forest view. Both are good and it just depends on your preference. You can pay more and have a room in the main lodge. The only real benefit here is that you can sit in one of the many alcoves and watch the lobby; personally I would rather be down on the main floor.
All that’s left to say is visit the next time you are at Disney you will not be disappointed.
