Disney by Helicopter
Always on the lookout for something different to do on our annual trip to our villa in Floirda, my 17 year old niece and I decided on a helicopter flight. We were recommended to try Helitours Orlando and booked on-line for a ten minute trip over the Disney area for $50 per person.
We arrived at the office which is about a quarter of a mile from Old Town at Marker 10 on Highway 192, just in time to see the previous party landing in the air conditioned, four man, Bell Jet Ranger helicopter. Excitement levels rose as our picture was taken beside and in the helicopter before we were introduced to our pilot and handed our two way headsets.
We took off quickly and chattered between ourselves as we swung round and headed for the Disney area. What struck us immediately form above was how very green the whole area is and particularly how tiny the car parks looked! It doesn’t feel like that if you have ever lost your car in one of them! As we flew over the resorts, the pilot pointed each of them out including Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and the various resort hotels such as the Swan and Dolphin. The only park it’s not allowed to fly over is Animal Kingdom so the animals are not alarmed.
Time went by quickly and we were soon headed back over Gaylord Palms. We had never been there and the pilot was very knowledgeable about it and on his recommendation we planned a visit with all the family later in the holiday and he was right; it was well worth the trip. We flew over Old Town right past the sling shot and though we’ve never been brave enough to try that it did look tempting.
We could have stayed up there a lot longer but sadly our time was up and we landed smoothly. For an extra $30 we purchased the 6 photos taken of us, which were emailed to us immediately and chose two of them to have printed. If there was a family member not flying it would be great to have had some photos of us taking off and landing too.
There are several options of tours ranging from a 3-4 minute ride for $25 for adults to a grand tour of 25 minutes for $175 per adult. My niece and I really enjoyed it and would recommend it for a different way of seeing the area.
