Day Trip to Key West
My parents stayed with friends in Miami last year and decided that rather than doing the long drive to Key West in their car they would take a day trip along with their friends.
They booked their trip on the internet and had to give at least seventy two hours notice. Although the trip picked up from some of the Miami Beach and Downtown Miami hotels they opted to be picked up from a central Miami location that was nearer to their friend’s apartment.
The price for this trip was $120 for adults and $100 for children and the trip started at 6. 30am.
My Father who is usually the driver really enjoyed the trip as instead of having to concentrate on the road he could just sit back enjoy the ride and see the wonderful scenery along the way. This included cross 42 bridges and 32 islands before eventually reaching the Southernmost city of North America Key West. Along the way they had “rest breaks” and the time actually spent in Key West was 12 noon to 5. 00pm.
Once they arrived at the destination they were free to do as they wished until later in the afternoon. When they got to Key West they immediately enjoyed the Caribbean atmosphere were fascinated by the street artists and stopped at one of the many outdoor cafes for a coffee and to plan the hours ahead of them.
Although tempted by the dolphin watching cruise as they were already booked to go on a two hour glass bottom boat ride they opted to take one of the shorter trolley tours so that they had enough time to visit Hemingway’s house afterwards. My Mother had previously visited the house with the girls and was anxious my Father would now see it. After this they made a quick trip to Mallory Square because no trip to Key West is complete without a visit there.
At the end of their trip they went on their two hour glass bottom boat trip to see the third largest reef in the world which is home to so many plants and fish. Because the bottom of the boat is made up of special glass windows they had a continuous view below them throughout the ride, this view is usually only seen by scuba divers. They said the crew were lovely and so knowledgeable and pointed out the most interesting marine life amongst the three hundred species of fish.
They returned to the bus exhilarated but tired and my Father for once was able to sleep for the whole journey home!
