Cruising – What to do on a Sea Day Part 1
If you are planning to cruise for the first time when you visit Florida, you may wonder what there is to do on sea days. Most cruises include a combination of days in port and days at sea, and if you have never cruised before you may not realise what fun a sea day can be.
For me, one of the best feelings is to wake up to a day at sea, en route to another interesting Caribbean port. When I look out of the window and see the horizon stretching out in front of me, the sun glinting on the rippling waves, and maybe a passing ship in the distance, I know that I have a day in which I can be as busy or as lazy as I like. It’s my choice.
So what can you expect from a day at sea. Well, of course, the first thing to decide is where to have breakfast. Should it be delivered to your door by a smartly uniformed steward, so that you can sit back in bed and relax? Or should you go down to one of the dining rooms where you will be waited on hand and foot, and a delicious range of breakfast items will be brought to your table?
Alternatively you could decide to visit the buffet, where you can pick and choose from a huge variety of hot dishes, fruit, cereals, cold meats, cheeses, breads, muffins and pastries. However, you could go up on deck and eat a continental breakfast al fresco, with the sun rising over the deck, and a warm breeze caressing your face. It’s your choice!
So having made that difficult decision, what next? Well, you will already have received your daily newsletter outlining the day’s activities, which will have been placed on your bed by the steward after he turns down your bed and leaves a chocolate on your pillow. So will it be a jog round the deck or a fitness class such as yoga or Pilates, or a workout in the state of the art gym? Maybe you feel like being pampered, in the Spa, where you can undergo a relaxing massage, a body wrap or a facial? All you need to do is book an appointment – but do so before your cruise sets sail if you can, as these are popular and get booked up quickly.
You might decide to join in with a dance class, or test your general knowledge at a quiz, or play a game of deck quoits, a great way to make new friends. Or perhaps you will just sit out on deck and lap up the sun, or watch the sea in case a passing dolphin should jump gracefully out of the water, or a flying fish fly so fast that you might wonder if you really saw it at all.
Or maybe you want to nip into the library and pick a best seller to read, or borrow a game or pack of cards in case the rest of the family decide to join you. You might even decide to check your emails – there is a fully equipped internet cafe on most ships.
So the morning passes in activity or restful relaxation, your choice, and guess what, its time to eat again! More choices! Lunch in the dining room or choose from the buffet, grab a quick burger or pizza round the pool or relax on your balcony with room service.
The afternoon stretches away in front of you. How can the morning have gone so quickly?
