Cruisin'at Old Town
On a Friday and Saturday at Old Town in Kissimmee, vintage motor bikes (on Friday) and vintage cars on Saturday arrive for Cruisin’ through the streets. By vintage, I mean cars and motor bikes from the 50’s and 60’s era. These cars and bikes are kept in absolute pristine condition and usually arrive on trailers rather than being driven, if you look at the shining silver engines you will see why. I would think their owners spend all their spare time polishing and lovingly tending to them, they are immaculate.
They start arriving at Old Town from 1pm onwards and they park up in a designated street for the owners to show off their “pride and joys”. The music playing is all 50’s and 60’s too and the owners often dress in period style (some I suspect always have done, particularly the Harley Davison riders). The public can view the cars and bikes, photograph them and talk to the owners about them. It is great to see all the old gas guzzlers back on the roads if even for just one day. They were so glamorous and redolent of an era of carefree post war days, before all the economic woes we have today arrived. I expect some of these cars would have been used in films like “Grease” and others of that time period. The owners love talking about them and what they have done to them. They will explain how many hours they spend on them and what other shows they have been to, some spend a great deal of their time travelling to various shows like this one.
At 8. 30 the cars all rev up for the start of the cruise through the streets of Old Town – the noise is like music to the ears of petrol heads like me. The pop music records give way to a live band playing the same old rock tunes as the cars slowly cruise along with their owners dressed in the period and waving like royalty. Many people who are obviously growing old “disgracefully” jive to the band and completely ignore the cars! The atmosphere is brilliant and well worth a visit.
After the cars have finished their parade most people stay to listen and dance to the band and many drift off to the fun fair rides at the back of Old Town. There are some very tame round-a-bouts and swings and a carousel, but there are also some that are definitely not for the faint hearted.
All in all this is a very good way to spend an evening and something quite different from the theme parks. I would highly recommend it. Who doesn’t like wandering around a fun fair eating candy floss or a toffee apple?
