Cirque du Soleil - La Nouba
Cirque du Soleil’s permanent show at Downtown Disney is brilliant. The suspicion that you are in for something special begins as you arrive for the show…………
I should say now that I am a huge fan of Cirque du Soleil and I have been fortunate enough, over the last seven or eight years, to have seen all the shows they have performed in London (and some of them I have seen more than once!) and they have all been utterly fantastic, so when I had the chance to go and see La Nouba in Orlando, I was convinced that it could not possibly be as wonderful as seeing their shows in the wonderful setting of the Albert Hall. I was proved to be completely wrong, of course.
The show in Downtown Disney is held in a purpose built theatre, which, from the outside, looks a bit like a futuristic circus tent made from white canvas with soaring peaks. Inside the auditorium the plush red velvet seats are very roomy and comfortable, and you have plenty of legroom. The seats are placed in a banked semi-circle round the stage, so that no matter where you sit you will get an excellent view.
The show begins with a traditional pre-circus parade, as the performers move around in the auditorium getting the audience’s attention and setting the scene, while a cleaner brushes the stage. When the show begins it is a feast of fantastic, breathtaking, energetic, magical and entrancing activity.
Over seventy artists perform in the show and they come from all over the world. Not a word is spoken on the stage and the ‘story’ is told through mime and wonderful facial expressions. Amongst the performers there are acrobats, trick cyclists, trapeze artists, dancers, gymnasts, clowns, musicians and diabolo artists.
There is never a dull moment on the stage and sometimes it is hard to know where to focus your attention. Look around the sides of the stage, and to the back, and you will always see something going on. Sometimes there are several little scenes being played out at the same time.
It is hard to pick out favourite acts from the show, but two that particularly stick in my mind are the Aerial Ballet in Silk and the Power Track/Trampolines. For the Aerial Ballet long, wide, red silk ribbons descend from above, flowing with gentle grace and ease. The performer entwines himself in these ribbons and uses them to glide around the stage and fly out over the audience – breathtaking! The Power Track/Trampolines act is an astonishing display of strength and brilliant timing. The acrobats tumble and bounce their way backwards and forwards across the stage and in and out of the open windows of a ‘building’ – astonishing!
Every aspect of the show is designed to flow and be magical. Every costume, the make up, every facial expression and every movement is beautifully choreographed. The music enhances, and adds excitement to, the whole experience with its haunting melodies and songs that appear to be sung in an obscure language. Every small detail of La Nouba has been perfected to provide an experience that will fill you with awe and wonder.
