Review of Cirque du Soleil – Downtown Disney
Upon entering the “theatre” we were surprised to find it smaller than we had expected. The seats were arranged down the sides of the black, nearly oval shaped stage. We were sat six rows from the stage, this made the show seem very personal and in our opinion, there is not a “bad seat” in the house.
Whilst we were waiting for everyone to be seated there were two clowns entertaining us. They were very visual with their presentation of how to move a number of light weight coloured, variously sized, boxes from A to B, from the audience to the stage. At various points in their journey they engaged the help of members of the audience. These people participated freely and did not seem to mind being in the limelight, this continued for about 20 minutes or so.
Throughout the show, there were no spoken words. However, the actions more than communicated what some of the performers were trying to achieve. One particular act was the changing of a light bulb which at first seemed simple enough but became harder and more delicately balanced as the light fitting was drawn up higher into the roof.
One part of the show which stood out, if any one thing can stand out as the whole performance was exceptional, was the four young oriental girls with their “reels and ropes”. Their speed, agility and perfect co-ordination left us spellbound.
There were bicycle acts, the likes of which we have never seen up close before. To some extent they put the BMX riders, seen occasionally on TV, to shame as they worked as one with the cycles with seamless precision. Tight rope walking left us mesmerised as the height at which this was carried out was would give a “normal” person a nose bleed, let alone vertigo. We use the word “normal” as all the performers seemed fearless and immortal. The way they throw themselves from one trapeze to another is awesome and one can only admire the hard work and dedication they have exercised in order to achieve this standard.
The performance by the bare-chested, muscle defined “superman” carried out with the “red curtains” was unbelievable. The strength, nerve and entertainment value left you wanting to see more.
All in all a very entertaining show, well worth the money. We were enthralled from start to finish and now know where Olympic gymnasts must perform when they have finished competing! A theatre full of people cannot be wrong when they gave a standing ovation.
We have reviewed only a small sample of the show, this is a show that you must see to appreciate how exceptional it is.
We shall definitely be returning on our next visit to Orlando.
