Celebration – a good afternoon out
The town of Celebration (on Highway 192 near the Disney turn off) was built originally as Walt Disney’s ideal of a modern suburb. It is supposed to be kept as litter free and clean as it is possible to get and all the homeowners have strict rules to which they must adhere, like keeping their lawns immaculate, keeping exteriors of houses perfectly painted and most residents use electric cars to go around the small town. They have their own huge hospital (open to non residents as well) and all the usual amenities, bank, post office etc.
But for tourists, it is a fascinating town for a quiet al fresco lunch, European style and a stroll round the shops. The shops are all very exclusive, hence expensive, but not so over the top that you would not buy anything. The many gift shops sell wonderful souvenirs and gifts. Apart from the gift shops there are speciality shops: the fabulous doll shop – strictly for little girls, the sweet shop, the dog accessory shop and the baby wear shop. There are quite a few mens and ladies wear shops and some speciality shops for golfers.
Just strolling around is very tranquil and calming and if you wish you can sit by the lake in a rocking chair under a sun umbrella and just relax. Most of the shops and restaurants are built around the lake making it one of the best places to eat al fresco in the Orlando area. There are expensive quality restaurants but plenty of normal priced too. The Market Street Café serves typical American diner food – burgers etc plus more substantial steak dinners. There is an Irish bar for drinks and a family restaurant, the Celebration Town Tavern, which is very well frequented and charge sensible prices. The D’Antonio Italian restaurant is rather more up market but well worth a visit. All of these overlook the lake
The Bohemian Hotel, is the only hotel in Celebration and is very exclusive, not your normal motel rates at all.
There is a multi screen cinema and it is situated next door to an ice cream parlour which sells wonderful selections of ice cream sundaes and ice cream milk shakes as well as drinks. A great place to go whilst waiting for your movie to start.
At Christmas time they pull out all the stops. There is a huge, decorated tree on the edge of the lake at the end of the main street leading down to the town square and all the trees are decorated with lights and red Christmas bows. From Thanksgiving day onwards until the new year, it snows in the main street! ! They also erect a small ice rink for traditional Christmas skating and all the shops become havens of decorations for you to buy.
So do not miss the opportunity to visit Walt Disney’s dream suburb and try and imagine living there. Maybe not!
