Brevard Zoo.
Brevard Zoo is in Melbourne on North Wickham Road.
This charming little zoo was the brain child of one Frank Vega. He enlisted the help of like minded people and locals and together the zoo started to take shape on land donated by a local businessman.
This it was that the zoo opened in 1994 and the locals still fund raise and volunteer for their little zoo.
Nowadays the zoo is divided into 4 distinct areas:
Australia/Asia has munt jacks, wallabies, kangaroos and emus among other species native to that part of the world. There is also a free flying bird aviary which is full of the sounds of parrots, kookaburras, cockatiels and cockatoos.
Africa is where where you will find giraffes, antelopes, lemur, primates and rhinos. They also have some engangered species including bald eagles, bob cats and red tailed hawks.
Now would be a good time to take a a kayak trip. Daily tours are available that take you through 22 acres of wetland.
Next we come to La Selva (jungle)The jaguars live here along with the capy bains, tapirs, ant eaters and monkeys. There are hollowed out palmettos for the giant ant eaters to forage for lunch.
Wild Florida features alligators (natch) along side red wolves, foxes and white tail deer. There is also an opportunity to feed the deer. They also have many endangered species such as bald eagles, bob cats and red tail hawks.
Petting areas are always popular with the little ones and this zoo has a nice one. There is also a water play area so bring the childrens swimming stuff. This lagoon is divided into 2 with a bubbles feature for tiny tots and an area with water that spouts up to 18 inches. Very refreshing on a hot day and could just be what saves the small children from a melt down!
In this area also is a fort a Wildlife detective agency and the reptiles.
The Detective Agency is situated in an indoor play area. Also here are the lizards, snakes, tortoises and so on.
On the third saturday of each month you can enrol your children for a night hike. These evenings include animal encounters, crafts and games and a zoo safari.
