Blizzard Beach
Disney’s imaginers have done it again! In the tropical state of Florida the last thing you would expect to come across is a ski resort, but this is exactly what has been created at Blizzard Beach. Legend has it that during a freak winter storm, snow fell over the west side of Walt Disney World and so began the plans for a ski resort. However, as soon as the sun emerged the snow began to melt and the plans had to be altered. The melting snow and ice created water flumes and toboggan runs and as a result Blizzard Beach was born.
Except for the fact temperatures are up in the 70’s and 80’s, you could actually imagine yourself being in a ski resort. As always, the attention to detail is what Disney does best. For instance, guests can hurtle headfirst down the side of Mount Gushmore on the Toboggan Racer, an eight-lane water slide and then ride a chairlift back up to the top of the mountain. This time descend by means of Summit Plummet, at one hundred and twenty feet it is one of the world’s highest freefall slides, and travelling at 55 miles per hour you’ll back at ground level in no time at all!
The thrill seekers amongst you will adore Snow Stormers and Runoff Rapids. One of the newest rides is Downhill Double Dipper, a dual water slide fifty feet high and two hundred feet long. Weaving and twisting, travelling at twenty-five miles per hour until guests eventually career out at the bottom through a wall of water. Awesome! !
For those of you are not so courageous, and would rather give the water slides a miss, I highly recommend the huge wave pool situated at the sandy beach just below Mount Gushmore. Another recommendation of mine would be the lazy river where you can float along at a leisurely pace whilst sitting in a tube or with your body submerged and just your arms, head and shoulders above the water.
Children have their own area called Tikes Peak, with small slides and icebergs, and even a smaller version of Mount Gushmore. The whole family can ride together in a giant raft as Teamboat Springs twists and turns along a one thousand two hundred foot water flume.
At the entrance to Blizzard Beach are the lockers, towel rentals, tube pick-up, first aid, a shop and a restaurant.
Everyone will enjoy Blizzard Beach, from young to old. From the adventurous to those who enjoy sitting in the shade and just watching. It’s a very pleasant change from the parks. Blizzard Beach is located just north of Disney’s All-Star Resorts.
