Bilmar Beach Resort and Sloppy Joes
When we stay at the Thunderbird Motel at Treasure Island we often visit the Bilmar which is next door located on the same wonderful sandy beach.
The Bilmar is quite a large resort and there appear to be weddings on the beach there every weekend. They put all the white seating on the beach and initially the wedding party are seated then there follows a slow procession of the bridesmaids and the bride. After a relatively short ceremony and when the photos have been taken everyone goes back to one of the large tents situated in front of the Bilmar for a reception where they normally enjoy a sit down meal followed by music for dancing. Most of the weddings take place near sunset so the photos can look spectacular, there is plenty of room in front of the Bilmar and we have at times seen three weddings on one day.
There is a bar at the back of the Bilmar and although we have not eaten here I believe the breakfast is very good. During the afternoon and usually until sunset you can sit outside and be entertained to live music until the sun goes down.
We tend to wander along the beach from the Thunderbird (it takes all of three minutes! ) and eat at Sloppy Joes which is located in the Bilmar for our evening meal. They actually open at 11. 00am but we have never eaten here at lunchtime. In the summer and at holiday periods it gets very busy however you can phone ahead and put your name on the waiting list. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating the latter is our favourite and if you can get a table here early evening on the front deck area you can eat while you watch the sun go down. If you sit indoors on Friday Saturday and Sunday there is live music but try not to sit next to it because you cannot hear any of the conversation on your table.
We love their hot wings and as a starter my Mother and I we often share these along with their homemade chips, salsa and guacamole. My Dad usually opts of the Peel and Eat Shrimp which keeps him occupied for a while!
If you do go there try their Firecracker Shrimp Taco this has a hot sauce and has cheese and coleslaw on top. They have a great selection of salads but beware they are not small and you can also add chicken or shrimp to them if you wish. There is lots of fish and steak on the entrée menu, it caters for all tastes.
The Bilmar is also famous for its annual Sand Sculpting Competition when sculptors come from all over compete, these are well worth going to see especially at night when they are illuminated.
If you are in the Treasure Island area do try to visit the Bilmar whether it is just for a drink or a meal.
