Berry Town Centre, Davenport
Berry Town Centre is located on the US27 off Sandmine Road in Davenport and is the local shopping centre for day to day shopping when we are at our villa on Highlands Reserve. At its heart is a large Publix supermarket which for those not in the know, is rather more up-market maybe than Wal-Mart food department, although not as large. The quality of the bakery and fresh produce is excellent and there is a good variety of dry goods in the ‘foreign aisle’ for those who cannot manage without Tetley Tea or Cadbury’s chocolate! They also make excellent sub sandwiches ideal for a lunchtime snack and have a useful pharmacy department and cash machine. There are butchery and fish departments both stocked by very helpful staff who are happy to provide whatever you are looking for and give advice on cooking it. There are also quite often demonstrations of new lines. Publix is open from 7am to 10pm every day but this can be affected by the time of the year. In common with many supermarkets they do sell wine and beer but not ‘hard liquor’.
No worries if you need to top up the gin or whisky supplies though as Berry Town Centre has a very well stocked liquor store just a few doors away from Publix. The prices are good and much cheaper to buy your duty free here than at the airport on the way home. Also on the same side of the road is an opticians, a hair salon with very friendly staff and a nail parlour, offering the usual manicures and pedicures. Quite handy to send the gents shopping ladies, while you enjoy a bit of pampering! !
There are also several eateries on this side of the road. There is Bamboo Wok Chinese and Mia Pizza take-aways and also a British Fish and Chip Bar, Sundays Grill, where you can take food away or eat in. They often have live music and karaoke and show a lot of the British football matches and some rugby and cricket too. Also on this side of Sand Mine Road is a Sun Trust Bank and a petrol (or rather, gas) station.
Crossing over Berry Boulevard there are another selection of restaurants and bars. The largest of these is probably Applebees, which is an American Sports themed Bar and Grill. This place has a great atmosphere and the food is a good standard and as usual in America, plenty of it! They often run two for one promotions on drinks and we found it is an ideal place for young adults in our group to have an evening out on their own – just don’t let them forget their ID if they are over 21 as they are very strict on observing the drinking laws.
Also on this side of the town centre is a small Japanese restaurant Kumo, which serves a variety of Asian food including Sushi, an Indian Restaurant, Dhaba Indian Cuisine, which also serves food to take away and Linksters Tap Room which is a Golf themed bar with a good variety of beers. All in all, there is something for whatever mood you are in, whether you choose to buy yourself something tasty from Publix to eat by the pool, grab a take-away after a long day at the parks or just treat yourself to a drink or a meal out.
