"Are we nearly there yet?"
This is something that always makes our family laugh when we recall the story. It happened on our first trip to Orlando in Aug. 2004, we had been there about a week and had decided to give the parks a rest and do a days shopping.
It was a gloriously sunny day and we had decided to go to the Beltz shopping outlets on International Drive. There were 5 of us in the car, husband, wife and 3 children Fern was 10, Josh 13 and Charlotte 16, needless to say I was driving (Dad).
I suppose we had to travel about 20 miles before we hit the bottom end International Drive, traffic was not too bad at that end, but anyone who knows International Drive knows that it gets very busy. There are lots of things to see on I-Drive, Wonder Works, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, Wet’n Wild to name but a few, we saw them all, from the front anyway. We only had about 4 or 5 more miles to go, but the further we went along the denser the traffic got until in was nose to tail and grinding along at a snails pace.
This started to get a bit daunting for me, as I was still not used to driving in the US, especially left turns. I was faced with two rows of traffic going both ways with no barrier between the opposite flows, people were pulling out in front of me, others were coming from the right and joining our rows.
We had all been drinking plenty of water, as it was such a hot day, and it was at this point that Josh decided to announce he wanted to go to the toilet. . ! ! “I’M NOT STOPPING, NOT IN ALL THIS ” I ‘calmly’ said, “YOU’LL JUST HAVE TO HOLD IT, THERE’S ONLY 3 MILES TO GO”.
Another 10 minutes or so went by, we had only managed to travel a few hundred yards, the traffic seemed thicker than ever, the cry from the back came again, “I can’t hold it”. We struggled on for another half mile with the cries from the back getting louder and more frequent, eventually I came up with the suggestion of using one of the water bottles to relieve the pressure, I’m not doing that was the response, anyway the holes not big enough. We pressed on.
I knew Josh had packed his Swiss army knife so I suggested, “use your Swiss army knife to cut the neck of the bottle”. This he did and much to the relief of everyone he finally overcame his embarrassment and used the container, after everyone promised not to look.
Not too long afterwards the traffic thinned out at the top of I-Drive and we finally got to Beltz where we disposed of the container.
We now have our very own superb villa, Nealy Nook, just 10 minutes from the Disney Parks, but we always make sure everyone has paid a visit “Jane” before we go. . ! !
