ARainy Day in Orlando pt 2
If theme parks in the rain do not float your boat- pardon the pun- there is always that great fallback shopping! As they say ' When the going gets tough, the tough go shopping' , and thats an experience not to be missed in Orando!
The big shopping malls such as The Florida Mall and The Mall at Milennia are completely indoors and therefore only a quick dash from the car park to the sanctuary of the entrance is required. The car parks are, however, likely to be considerably busier than usual when the weather is poor so you may have to park your vehicle some distance away from the entrance, making your dash a very long one, so possibly, on this occasion, why not keep yourself dry and splash out on valet parking, the charge would be in the region of seven dollars not including a tip. Valet parking is also to be found at Premium Outlets both at International Drive and Vineland Avenue. At both these locations you will find plenty of opportunities to keep dry, even though they are not enclosed in their entirety.
It is best to avoid malls and plazas such as The Loop and Lake Buena Vista Outlets where there is very minimal shelter from the rain to be had, save that of the food court, the restaurants and the stores themselves. Something we have never found in the Uk but offered here, by a lot of the stores, during rain showers, are umbrella bags. These long plastic bags are to be found hanging at the store' s entrance and you are encouraged to slip your umbrella inside in order to prevent it from dripping everywhere, which in turn prevents the floor from becoming hazardous- a great idea!
If you are lucky enough to be staying in a villa, you may prefer to stay at home for at least part of the day. Here you will often find plenty of books to read, DVD' s to be watched and sometimes board games to play. More often than not you will also find electronic games such as play stations and Wii to occupy your time. Many villas have games rooms where pool tables, ping pong and table football are amongst the available forms of entertainment. Also remember the villa pool is only out of bounds if the rain is accompanied by lightening.
Eat out! Many visitors to Orlando experience only the fat food of the theme parks or maybe a meal out in the evening - but why not choose a long leisurely breakfast? If it rains on a Sunday some of the bigger hotels do fantastic brunches which last for hours. Eat out at lunchtime a totally different experience to an evening meal. Or try our favourite, eat out on the deck at Bahama Breeze, covered so protected from the elements where after 5pm you will enjoy free musical entertainment with a Caribbean flavour.
Another option is the cinema, films are often released earlier in the US than in the UK, you will find large multi screen cinema locations at Universal City Walk, The Loop or why not combine it with a meal at the drive in cinema at Downtown Disney?
Go to Spain , Greece or Turkey for your holidays and if it rains there will be little else to do other than congregate in the hotel bar! In Orlando you will never be stuck for something to do on a rainy day.
