A Rainy Day in Orlando pt 1
Orlando and rain are synonymous in the summer months, but mostly it will be a short , sharp shower in the late afternoon to ease the increasing heat and humidity. Often, within minutes, the sun is out and cracking the pavements again. It is rare to get whole days of rain, but sometimes this happens when there are weather systems around such as tropical storms and hurricanes. Orlando itself is rarely affected directly by hurricanes, but more likely to be troubled by the rain and wind when hurricanes affect costal areas.
So what does one do in these situations? Well you can always carry on regardless! Everyone who has been to Orlando will have seen the famous ponchos, kept under the counter at all the theme parks and brought out when the rains come. Of course you can always go prepared beforehand and buy a poncho at Walmart, or somewhere similar, for two or three dollars less than you will pay in the parks.
Rain on its own rarely affects any of the park activities and only when accompanied by wind or lightening will there be any restrictions. When lightening occurs guests are asked to vacate the pools at watermarks, some rides, especially those involving water may be temporarily affected and shows at Seaworld are affected. High winds and lightening will cause the cancellation of firework displays and the suspension of some of the higher thrill rides. Parks have been known to close for half a day or a day in very extreme weather.
However, we are talking about rain here and if you are going to the theme parks on a day of heavy rain and not just showers then, in our opinion, Epcot is probably the park where you will find the most to entertain you whilst keeping dry at the same time.
Unlike most of the activities in the lands at the Magic Kingdom the attractions of Future World are almost entirely indoors. The land and The seas pavilions both hold several attractions which can keep you occupied for up to two hours at a time. Spaceship Earth may not be a lengthy journey but on leaving the ride you will find additional entertainment in the exit area. Likewise with Journet into the Imagination.
The Universe of Energy attraction lasts for in excess of 45 minutes and whilst Test Track would involve being exposed to the elements, the Test Track pavilion houses lots of big boys toys, that is, fast cars and super trucks. Add to this innoventions east and west and that' s a full day sorted with just a few mad dashes in the rain between pavilions. World Showcase is probably less easy to experience in the rain if your prime motive is to keep dry, but would be negotiable between showers.
Remember when booking special Disney experiences such as The Backstage Magic Tour, Around the World at Epcot Segway tour and the fireworks dessert party that rain checks are not permitted and the event will usually carry on regardless - sometimes in a shortened form eg. The Segway Tour, and if this occurs a partial refund will be made. Full refunds would only be given on cancellation of the event and this is rare.
