We visit our home in Orlando regularly, and love Florida whatever time of year we go.
If you are restricted to the summer months, and particularly July and August then you will find middle to late August very pleasant. The American children have already gone back to school, and so the queues at the parks will be shorter. Of course it can be very hot and humid, with heavy rain showers or thunderstorms in the afternoons, but these are tropical in nature and start and end rapidly. On the plus side the parks are open long hours, and of course wherever you go there is air conditioning – in your car, at the shops and in restaurants etc. , so you will be able to cool off where necessary. In fact I generally carry a cardigan as I find it can be too cool in these areas. We find it an ideal time to visit the water parks as it is very refreshing to jump into the lazy river, for example, when the heat gets too intense, or to wade out into the huge beach area and splash about in the cool water.
One of our favourite times is September. The weather is warm and not quite so humid as in July or August, the children have gone back to school and the parks are much less crowded. It is a time which many people overlook, but we particularly enjoy a break in September. There are often great sales in the shops, too, so you will walk away with many bargains.
October is another of our favourite months, particularly the first two weeks, before most of the UK schools break up – although some parts of the UK break up earlier. The weather, again, is less humid but the temperatures are great and there is often much sunshine. If you are thinking about booking the UK half term weeks then do remember it is very popular and gets booked up well ahead of time.
November is a popular time with US visitors as at the end of the month there is Thanksgiving, a time of great celebration and family vacations. There are great sales during this time, and of course the temperatures are much more bearable. The parks also get decorated for Halloween, and Mickey’s Very Scary Halloween party is something not to miss. You are likely to be able to walk around in t-shirt and shorts, but you may need a cardigan or jacket for the evening firework displays.
In fact, the parks start getting ready for the holiday season in late Autumn, so if you can take a break in early December you will have the best of both worlds – warm temperatures, few crowds, and beautifully decorated parks and malls in the run up to Christmas. You can visit Father Christmas at Mall at Millenia, take in all the magical Christmas specials at Disney such as the special Christmas nights at Magic Kingdom. Although the weather should be sunny and warm, December can also have some cold days – including temperatures down to freezing. You just cannot predict ahead of time, and we have had temperatures which needed gloves, coats and scarves but in 2008 we experienced temperatures in the 80s on each day of our stay. So just be prepared. If you take some warm clothes and don’t wear them then that is a bonus. Even if it is cold it is usually sunny so temperatures rise during the day.
