We had just missed the Indiana Jones show and our fast pass returns to the Hollywood Tower of Terror didn’t kick in for another hour or so. To pass the time we headed for the Back Lot Tour and Catastrophe Canyon only to find it closed for refurbishment.
Now, under normal circumstances, we wouldn’t have given the Voyage of the Little Mermaid a second glance but with time to kill it seemed like a good idea at the time…. and so it proved to be.
The audience waits in a holding area reminiscent of an old fisherman’s cottage, full of nets, floats, fishing tackle and all sorts of other paraphernalia, before being ushered in to the theatre.
Loosely based on the 1989 film The Little Mermaid we were pleasantly surprised how this fifteen minute show was able to combine the very best special effects with superb animation, brilliant puppetry in the form of the undersea creatures and an excellent live performance from the Little Mermaid herself.
The story begins with an animation of the raging seas with salt spray soaking the unsuspecting audience, which makes just about everyone wriggle in their seats with some covering their heads to shelter from the torrent.
After a wonderful virtuoso performance from the puppeteers we enter the underwater world of the Little Mermaid. The story is such that she longs to reach the surface and become part of the human race. Her parents, however, forbid this and tell of the many perils that may befall her if she were ever to leave the ocean depths.
Enter the wicked sea witch Ursula who offers the Little Mermaid a way out…but at a cost.
She will grant her wish to become human for three days to find the man of her dreams, but if he doesn’t kiss her within that period she has to return to being a Mermaid forever. However, if he does, she can no longer return to the sea and will never see her parents again.
There then follows a lovely solo singing performance from the Little Mermaid as she contemplates her future. At this point we are not going to spoil the story for you but suffice to say it all ends happily.
We were very impressed how well this production is put together and it is just long enough to hold the attention of the younger members of the audience. It provides good all round family entertainment and is well worth stopping by.
