If you are a keen golfer I can think of no better place to play a round of golf than Florida. With so many courses from which to choose and, of course, not forgetting the year round sunny weather you will be spoilt for choice. My wife is the keen golfer in our family, although I do keep threatening to take the game up. On each of our trips to Florida she likes to try and play one or two of the many excellent courses close to our home near Clermont
On our most recent visit she booked in to play eighteen holes at the Legends Golf and Country Club, which is situated on the US27 some four miles south of the city of Clermont and is fringed by a villa community that is set amongst the rolling hillsides of Lake County.
The day before her round we decided to go and hit a few balls on the range at Legends, which would also serve to help familiarise my wife with the driving directions from our villa in Orange Tree a few miles to the south.
Upon arrival, a member of staff raced across the parking lot in a golf cart to meet us and offer a friendly welcome. He immediately proceeded to remove the bag of clubs from the trunk and load them on to the cart.
We explained that we had only come along to hit a few balls on the range, but no matter, he directed us to the pro shop (for payment purposes) and said the cart would be waiting for us outside.
So we picked up a hundred balls, jumped into the cart and headed for the range, which couldn’t have been more than the distance of a good chip shot away. Even over such a short distance I was fascinated with the onboard equipment that included a bunker rake, ‘green’ sand to repair divots, a water cooler and a GPS system that provided all sorts of information about pin distances so as to allow for correct club selection to be made.
On reaching the range there were the most spectacular views over to Lake Louisa, which could easily prove to be a distraction to any golfer, but we kept our heads down and enjoyed a good half hour targeting the three greens of varying distance laid out before us.
This had been a welcome introduction for me into the golfing world and, given the friendliness of the staff and the beautiful manicured course, I think a few more lessons are in order so that on our next trip I’ll have the confidence to join my wife for a round of golf.
