After a morning perusing the stores at Downtown Disney a decision was needed on where to eat. Having already sampled many of the well known outlets such as Planet Hollywood, Rainforest Café and others, we decided to look for something a little different. Tucked away at the end of South Side next to Cirque du Soleil we happened upon House of Blues. We first checked the menu on the board outside and found a fascinating mixture of classic southern cooking.
Items included such favourites as:
Pan Seared Voodoo Shrimp with Rosemary Cornbread and Dixie Beer Reduction
Crispy Catfish Nuggets with Sweet Potatoes French Fries
Cajun Smoked Turkey and Shrimp File Gumbo with white rice, diced tomatoes
And lemon
Traditional Shrimp Po-Boy with Spicy Tartar Sauce
Creole Seafood Jambalaya with Shrimp, Chicken, Andouille Sausage with
Roasted Green Onions
Louisiana Shrimp Creole served over a Pan Seared Catfish Fillet with White Rice and Sauted Green Beans
Cajun Meatloaf with Mushroom Gravy
Baby Back Ribs with Jim Bean BBQ sauce and Mashed Sweet Potatoes
As well as a wide variety of more common fare such as burgers, steaks, salads and chicken dishes as well as a childrens menu. We decided we had to give this a go.
To the right of the entrance was a Music Hall but more of this later. The restaurant itself was decorated in a most peculiar southern style with walls covered in fascinating pieces of original American folk art artwork. After only a short wait we were shown to a good size, clean booth. The service was attentive and the food was probably amongst the best we have tasted in Florida. The adult meals were flavoursome without being excessively spicy. Even the children’s meals were of high quality.
We learnt that House of Blues is a home for live music and southern-inspired cuisine in an environment celebrating the African American cultural contributions of blues music and folk art. In 1992, The company converted a historical house in Cambridge, Massachusetts into the original House of Blues.
We were given a musical itinerary for the month which showed that the music hall next door featured a wide range of music highlighting a different band each night. Interesting too was the fact that each Sunday was a Gospel Brunch where you can enjoy a live gospel performance while indulging in an all-you-can-eat southern-style buffet.
If you don’t want to queue for the Music Hall in the evening you can jump the line by presenting your dinner receipt to get priority entrance.
Overall we were hugely impressed with this gem of a restaurant serving such high quality food and would highly recommend it.
