Our teenage daughter’s love this restaurant, just off the main street running through the centre of Disney Hollywood Studios. As the name of suggests the restaurant is linked very closely and designed in the style of the 1950s. However it doesn’t end there. The servers, who play an important role in the character of the restaurant, are dressed in that style too – but the food is not like a 1950s diner! More on the food later
As you enter and are greeted there is the bar and waiting area to the left, styled and finished to appear like individual lounges from the 1950s (think of the sets you have seen on ‘Happy Days’, or ‘I Love Lucy’).
When you are called – and this is not in the normal way – you may be told “Come on Kids. It’s time to come through”, you enter the main restaurant area and see individual eating areas looking like many kitchens. The TVs are from the ‘50s, the tables and chairs are chrome and covered in Formica whilst the accessories and utensils relate back to that era. Old 50’s shows run on the black and white TVs – fascinating to bring back the nostalgia or to remind you of the many re-runs you have seen recently (Your Father Knows better, The Mickey Mouse Club)! No matter which there is something homely and familiar about being in this restaurant.
Your waiter/waitress will talk to you as though you are their child and they take on the parent/grandparent role. Remember your manners and don’t answer back! ! Remember to keep your elbows off the table and eat all your vegetables …. If you don’t you may find yourself having to stand with your face to the wall (as did my oldest child! ). Full of gentle banter its part of the atmosphere of this restaurant!
Looking at the menu you get the feeling that it could be being cooked by your parent or grand parent! The choice is not the largest but there is something for everyone. Onion rings, crab cake and shrimp cocktail make up the starters along with soup (this may vary).
The main course/entrée have names like ‘Aunt Liz’s Golden Fried chicken, Cousin Eric’s Char-grilled Sandwich , Mom’s Old Fashioned Pot Roast and Uncle Charlie’s Grilled Tuna Casserole. Deserts continue this theme - for example, Dad’s Brownie Sundae. The normal variety of soft and alcoholic drinks are available - if you are a milkshake fan these are worth ordering.
One thing we really enjoy is the food is served with a variety of potato (mash/jacket and fries) as well as fresh vegetables such as carrots, green beans, mushrooms, celery to name a few.
Just like Disney the aim of this restaurant is to offer an alternative way to eat and have fun. A real alternative restaurant and one we shall be returning too on our next visit to Hollywood Studios!
